Hadi Toron is an accomplished Syrian-American artist and diplomat who lives and works in the United States. He was born in Damascus in 1945.
Like many gifted artists, his talent was recognized early. Indeed, from the age of ten, the young Hadi Toron spent much of his time focused on his main passion: drawing. At 16, he was sent to Rome to study classical and contemporary art; and later returned to Syria to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus and graduated with honor. His graduate thesis is a chronicle of the ancient walls of Damascus; the oldest continuously inhabited city in history.
A prolific artist, Hadi Toron has shown his work in innumerable solo and group exhibitions all over the world. His work can be found in corporate settings and in the home of private collectors in the US and abroad. Toron’s urgent need to chronicle his sensory experience of century old cultures is shown vividly in his paintings. Through his unique abstract yet representational style, Hadi Toron unveils his insight in the hidden mysteries and the divine that dwell in these ancient cultures. This can be observed in the work he painted in Sudan while stationed there for the United Nations. His Sudanese paintings are not merely whirling dervishes; they are also the representation of the Soul of Sudan, which he still paints. Mr. Toron is a finalist of the Guggenheim Fellowship.
